The “small hours” are the earliest hours of the day, when things are quietest, when we can hear our own thoughts beyond the din of regular life and the distraction which stuffs its way into every other corner of the day. Then, we can see things more clearly and receive fresh insight.
To me, the small hours represent the time when the veil between the spiritual and the mundane is thin. The time in the day when we can find ourselves, when we can remember, when we can listen.
I am a biracial, South Indian American woman of color, a writer, an editor, and the founder of Clerestory. I studied literature as an undergrad at Middlebury and religion as a graduate student at Yale. I’m currently studying contemplative religion and practice at the Living School for Action and Contemplation. I’m a regular contributor to Darling, Earth & Altar, and The Porch. My writing appears elsewhere in Relevant and Patheos, among others.
Join me in this thin place, in the small hours, as I sift my way to clarity, as we all must.
In the meantime, tell your friends!
